Lorrie L. Bowen is an Advocate for the Training of the Visually Impaired


MONTEVALLO, AL, June 28, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Lorrie L. Bowen, Vision Rehabilitation Therapist for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of veterans services.

With 17 years of professional experience, Ms. Bowen is recognized as an expert in caseload management. She lends her talents to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), where she works with veterans who are visually impaired. Her responsibilities include training veterans in the use of Braille, handwriting, mobility and basic life skills such as cooking and checkbook balancing, monitoring and coordinating treatment programs, and ensuring that veterans are in agreement with their programs. Ms. Bowen began her career as an assistant rehabilitation counselor in the mental healthcare field; desiring to take a more hands-on approach to healing, she ventured into training for the visually impaired. She attributes her success to her organizational skills, attention to detail, and commitment to giving confidence to handicapped veterans.

Ms. Bowen is a Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist through the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals. She received her Master of Arts in Blind Rehabilitation Teaching in 1992 from Western Michigan University and her Bachelor of Arts in Rehabilitation Counseling in 1983 from Wilberforce University. Her professional affiliations include the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals, the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, VA's Federal Women's Program, the Board of Directors of the Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired, and Toastmasters International. She also participates in various continuing education programs. In five years, Ms. Bowen aspires to attain a management position at VA, develop a program to rehabilitate veterans, and coordinate a program to train other professionals to teach veterans.
