Local Dentist Attends Sleep Seminar
Dr. Ira Shapira gives his report of a sleep seminar concerning the treatment of sleep apnea.

Shapira, DDS, principal of Delany Dental Care, Ltd., Gurnee, IL, recently attended the Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine's annual meeting in Denver, CO. While attending he was part of a focus group with Respironics, the largest manufacturer of CPAP and sleep diagnostics to help mold the future of treatment options for patients with sleep apnea and snoring. Though CPAP is still considered the "Gold Standard" of treatment for sleep apnea, current research is showing oral appliances are preferred by patients and have higher utilization especially in patients with snoring, upper airway resistance and mild to moderate apnea. CPAP remains the treatment of choice for sever apneics who tolerate the treatment.
Dr. Ira L. Shapira is credentialed in providing oral appliances for obstructive sleep apnea and snoring. He has 20 years experience in treating patients with sleep disorders and is one of only three dentists in the State of Illinois and one of less than one hundred dentists nationwide who hold this distinction.
Dr. Shapira is a former Assistant Professor at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical School's Sleep Disorder Clinic where he treated patients with sleep apnea and other sleep disorders. He is a diplomat of The Academy of Pain Management and a fellow and former international regent of The International College of Cranio-Mandibular Orthopedics. A member of The Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, Dr. Shapira has lectured nationally at the Anti-Aging Medicine's Annual Conferences. He is a member of The American Equilibration Society, Illinois State Dental Society, Chicago Dental Society, and the Lake County Dental Society's Waukegan Dental Study Club.
